'I am interested in aged and worn surfaces both from interiors, coastal and urban environments which are evident as strong influences. The paintings reflect memories, thoughts and observations of everyday life which are interwoven through each painting.’
Cornish artist Sonia Barton gained a B.A. (Hons) in Fine Art at Staffordshire University, followed by a Post-Graduate Diploma in Fine Art Printmaking at Brighton University, where she gained the highest grade of Honours. She was subsequently offered MA Fine Art positions at Edinburgh and Central Schools of Art, London. Sonia exhibits regularly throughout the UK: the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and the Royal Scottish Academy, among others. Her work is highly sought, and is represented in many different collections worldwide, in America, Australia, Hongkong, and thoruughout Europe.
Reflecting on her artistry, she writes:
‘I was born in Cornwall and have moved many times, particularly in childhood. These memories constantly resurface through the study of still life. Familiar objects wrapped, put away and unwrapped providing a constant in my life. Often explored through a muted colour palette, the juxtaposition of forms and shapes are emphasised with flattened perspective and a naive distortion of objects. The objects are often 'moved' around the canvas, leaving traces of their previous existence. There is a feeling of time, an ebb and flow, which develops in my work.
Many layers of paint are added, areas are scraped back, lines and marks appear and disappear. I am interested in aged and worn surfaces both from interiors, coastal and urban environments which are evident as strong influences. The paintings reflect memories, thoughts and observations of everyday life which are interwoven through each painting.’
