Claire Hankinson

"When I am painting in oils, or drawing in charcoal,  I am drawn to the essence and the ambiguity of my subject.  Whether I am by a wild sea, in the middle of remote woodlands, or looking at the shape of an ancient object,  it is finding the balance between the abstraction and reality of the subject that I would hope to convey in my work."

"I love the use of very dark against very light contrast in my images, and equally, the intensity of vibrant colour in a painting.  Many artists’ work has influenced my own, amongst these are Nicholas de Stael, and William Scott, together with many contemporary artists as well."
Finding inspiration in work from other contemporary artists such as William Scott and Nicolas de Stael, Claire Hankinson creates abstractions of the world around her, from everyday objects to seascapes. She highlights the defining shapes of each of these subjects, emphasizing them at their most base forms. She creates these abstractions through a masterful use and understanding of colour, light, and shape. Claire's work can be found throughout other galleries in London, as well internationally in private collections in France and Sweden.
