Claire Hankinson

‘I am drawn to the essence and ambiguity of my subjects, and I love the wonderful depth, flow, and endless possibility of the oils with which I work.  It is finding the balance between abstraction and reality in my work that I hope to convey – whether that be a wild sea, a figure seen in an ancient cliff, or a compelling, intriguing object.’
Following a career in the City, Claire Hankinson decided to pursue her love of Art, training first at the Chelsea School of Art, and then at Putney School of Art, in addition to studying with several inspirational tutors at St Ives School of Painting, and at the Newlyn School of Art (including the late Rose Hilton). Hankinson creates abstractions of the world around her – whether from everyday objects, or unusual landscape forms, highlighting and emphasising the defining shapes of these subjects and delivering these scenes through a masterful use and understanding of colour, light and shape. Her work can be found in other galleries in London, as well as in private collections both in the UK and internationally in France and Sweden.

Hankinson writes:
‘I love the use of very dark against very light contrast in my work, and equally, the intensity of vibrant colour in a painting.  The selecting of frames for each of my works is also very much part of my process, with an emphasis on whether a piece should be placed with something antique or reclaimed or alternatively hand painted and with simple lines.’
